Dish vs Remote Gamepad and other phone-as-controller apps: a fair comparison


If you’ve searched for “use my phone as a wireless controller for PC” in the last few years, you’ve almost certainly come across one of these:

  • Remote Gamepad (a few different apps go by this name; the most popular has ~5M Play Store installs)
  • Monect PC Remote (~10M installs)
  • PC Remote Receiver by Monect
  • Mobile Gamepad (~1M installs)
  • DroidJoy Gamepad Joystick
  • Gamepad: Xbox360, PS3 Emulator (yes, that’s the name)

They’ve all built variations on the same idea: an Android app with on-screen buttons that talks to a Windows companion app over your network. They’ve collectively introduced millions of people to phone-as-controller, which is great.

Less great: most of them are free with ads, track you, and have lag you can feel. Some of the most popular ones ask for permissions like your contacts and your location, wildly more access than a controller app should ever need.

The biggest everyday difference is the feel. These older apps were mostly built as media remotes first and gamepads second, so they sample your screen slowly and the connection isn’t tuned for the constant little messages a controller sends. The result is lag you’ll notice the moment a game asks for a frame-perfect input.

Why “Remote Gamepad” apps feel laggy

Most bundle ad and tracking tools, and the free versions show full-screen ads.

Why “Remote Gamepad” apps are bad on shared Wi-Fi

Most of these apps trust any device that knows your PC’s name on the network, or use a simple password that travels in the open. That’s fine on home Wi-Fi where you trust everyone. It’s not fine in a coffee shop, a hotel, a dorm, or a friend’s house, where someone on the same network could watch, or even mess with, what you’re doing.

Where the existing apps still have edges

1. They have iOS apps right now

Several “Remote Gamepad” apps have iOS clients today. Dish doesn’t have an iOS client, so if you need an iPhone to be the controller this week, the existing apps are an option.

2. They do more than gamepads

Some bundle hundreds of preset control schemes: keyboard mapping, mouse control, presentation remotes, media keys. Dish is a gamepad. It focuses on being a great controller and lets you build your own layout, but it doesn’t try to be a do-everything remote.

3. They work over the internet (sort of)

Some have a paid “remote access” feature that works from anywhere through their servers. Dish is for your home network by design, which is how it stays so fast. If you need to control your PC from across the internet, those apps may fit better, at the cost of responsiveness, privacy, and a subscription.

Who should switch

You should switch from a “Remote Gamepad” / Monect / PC Remote-style app to Dish if:
